Japanese Inspired Garden
- Summary of Challenge: Japanese inspired garden. We were tasked with transforming a sloped, wooded site into a useable, Japanese-garden inspired space for the clients and their two children to explore and enjoy both day and night. The existing landscape was overgrown including juniper covering most of the hillside. There were several existing elements in the landscape that needed to be incorporated such as: swimming pool, specimen trees, and existing patios/paths. The client also requested a more private, peaceful area outside of his home office.
- Summary of Solution: Following a design by Outdoor Environments LLC, we cleared the juniper from the hillside, carved pathways into slope and retained the slope with boulders and plants. Stone slabs were used for several staircases down the slope and gravel paths led throughout the space. The pathways allowed access to the entire yard for the children to roam. Three raised garden beds and a trellis were installed for fruits and veggies, another kid-friendly feature. A unique water feature was installed to be viewed both from the upper patio and the main living room of the home. A mobile-device controlled low-voltage lighting system was installed to create a romantic, magical evening ambiance. The space outside the owner’s office included a small, tranquil water feature, minimal lighting and plantings. The entire family was thrilled with the result and continue to enjoy it. We continue to provide weekly maintenance for this garden.
