In the Pacific Northwest, we love the outdoors and take every opportunity to spend some time in nature. Our wet winters and hot summers are not always conducive to sitting in the yard. However, with one of our custom covered structures, you can enjoy the fresh air any time of year.

Landscape East & West is committed to creating beautiful and functional landscapes no matter what size yard you have. Through decades in the business, we have developed a reputation as Portland’s premier landscaping company, answering your landscape dilemmas with beautiful and functional spaces.

Our Custom Covered Structures Services

Our custom covered structures offer protection from rain and sun, but there’s so much more. A covered structure may enclose an outdoor kitchen, dining area, lounge, or firepit, adding extra living space to your home. The high-quality custom designs we create can complement your home’s architecture, stand as stunning focal points, and boost the curb appeal and value of your property.

Pergolas

Pergolas

Best known for their role in supporting vines such as grapes or wisteria, our hand-built pergolas are a framework of pillars that support crossbeams and open lattice. It is an open structure that allows filtered light in but can be covered with fabric for added sun protection.

Gazebos

A freestanding, covered structure with a roof and open sides that can be large enough for a porch swing or large table to accommodate an outdoor event. Whether a simple structure or a more intricate design, our gazebos can add romance or European flair to your yard.

Patio Covers

Patio Covers

Providing a seamless transition from inside to outside is as simple as adding a cover or roof to your patio. The space can be enclosed or open and versatile in how you use it: Cozy fireplace, modern kitchen, casual firepit, relaxing hot tub –whatever your vision, we can make it happen.

Arbor & Trellis

While these structures don’t provide rain protection, the arched structures with latticed roofs create a tunnel that forms an enticing entryway, walkway, or focal point. Our expert woodworkers can design the structure to arc over a water feature, support flowering vines, or be flanked by greenery to add drama to your landscape.

Design and Material Options

Because we custom design our covered structures, you have choices. From materials to color and roof type, we’ll work with you to ensure the result matches your home and your taste. A good place to start is with the type of material the structure will be built from.

The majority of structures we build in the Pacific Northwest are wood because they best match the natural look of our region. However, modern homes may call for steel. No matter what we use, our intent is to have your structure blend seamlessly with the overall aesthetic of your property from roof to trim.

Metal and Wood Materials

Often we combine metal and wood, using steel for it’s durability and strength, and wood to soften the look. Fir or cedar are the wood types most often used —rough side out for a rustic look or finished side out or more polish. Steel can be used beyond the framing, added as an accent or trim to a wooden structure. Similarly, wood accents add depth to a steel structure. It’s not just the choice of wood or steel, we can also add sky lights, heaters, fans, lights, and sound systems into the structure to truly customize it for your needs as well as your tastes. No matter what materials or functional design elements you pick, our custom structures are built to require minimal maintenance and last for decades.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Covered Structures

  • Functionality: What is the Intended use of your covered structure? Do you want a large space you can use year-round for entertaining, a smaller area for summer reading, or a structure that adds drama to feature your landscape? Removable walls, adjustable louvers, and retractable awnings can all add flexibility to your choice.
  • Available Space: We’ll evaluate how much space is available in your yard for a structure. A covered structure should fit comfortably into the landscape without overwhelming the surroundings. We’ll also help you determine the ideal location, whether it’s conveniently close to your house or tucked away for added privacy.
  • Safety and Durability: Maintenance requirements can mean there are times your structure may not look its best, and there’s an added cost to bring it back to prime condition. Material choices, as well as design decisions, can impact maintenance requirements. Be sure to determine how much time and effort you can invest.

Our Design and Build Process

  • Consultation: We start every project with an initial discussion to understand the client’s vision, needs, and budget.
  • Evaluation: We’ll visit your home to evaluate your site. We’ll determine if the project will fit the space and then look at specifics or how the structure will be oriented to the sun and wind. We also identify any potential challenges to installation.
  • Design: Our designers will create a preliminary design complete with a cost estimate and timeline for the client’s review. We’ll incorporate any changes the client has, not only during the design phase but through every step of the project.
  • Preparation: Prior to breaking ground, we’ll address any local building permit requirements to ensure the project meets code and that all the materials are ordered and ready.
  • Installation: Our installers will get to work constructing the custom covered structure that we outlined with the client, paying close attention to every detail of the structure as well as where and how it is placed.
  • Finishing Touches: With the custom covered structure installed, we’ll add the finishing touches such as lighting, seating, water or fire features, and any other decorative elements that make the space truly unique.
