At Landscape East & West, we can add functionality to your landscape in many ways, but one of our favorites is to design and build a custom outdoor deck. There are just some Oregon yards that weren’t meant for sweeping lawns or paver patios. Rocks and roots, poor soil quality, uneven ground, and extreme slopes can pose a challenge to traditional landscaping. We recommend you consider a high-quality deck instead.

For decades, our Portland deck building team has been building outdoor decks that add beauty to outdoor living spaces and are built to last. Our custom deck designs ensure your yard will have the look and livability that you want, no matter what materials, colors, patterns, and layout you choose.

Our Deck Design and Building Services

Like all our services at Landscape East & West, deck design and building are fully customizable to ensure your backyard deck matches your outdoor lifestyle and integrates with the surrounding landscape. We can also build a deck to fit any space. Take a look at some of the options we offer:

Front Porch Design and Construction

The right front porch on your home should look like it was always meant to be a welcoming portal for visitors. Whether you want a larger porch with seating for long chats with neighbors or just need a nice sheltered area to keep you and your guests out of the rain, our woodworkers can create the perfect porch.

Integrated Lighting and Seating Options

Outdoor decks can accommodate many functions. If you’re looking for a place to gather friends, we can add built-in seating. Hoping to delineate different uses? Our woodworkers can design built-in walls, planters, and bench seating. Then we make sure it can be used day and night by adding sconces, low lights, and task lighting that also adds safety.

Balconies

Decks don’t have to hover right over the ground. In fact, we can custom-design balconies that can be accessed from the upper floors of your house. This provides sheltered space below for added function to your yard. We keep you safe by adding railings, offering endless design possibilities to cater to your style.

Back Deck

A back deck can have multiple purposes. It can surround a pool, support a covered outdoor kitchen, contain raised beds and planters, hold a firepit, or be the base for the ideal lounge spot. Hovering just over the ground or raised, covered or not, a back deck can transform your outdoor living area into a functional oasis.

Deck Materials

A backyard deck is a perfect way to designate space within your landscape for dining, entertaining, or meeting with friends. All of our backyard deck designs are specifically tailored to meet the needs of your home. We work with a variety of materials, including:

Wood

Wood offers natural beauty with warm, earthy tones that fit with most surroundings. There are softwood options like cedar or juniper or hardwoods such as Ipe or mahogany that each offer their own aesthetic as well as pros and cons. Softwoods are the most budget-friendly, but they can splinter, warp, or crack. Wood also requires regular maintenance, such as cleaning, staining, and painting.

Composite

Composite decking is made from a blend of wood fibers and recycled or virgin plastic. Typical brands we use include Trex, TimberTech, and Fiberon. This type of outdoor deck is highly durable, weather-resistant, and low maintenance. It also comes in a variety of colors or can be constructed to resemble the look of wood. Composite decking does cost a bit more upfront, but you’d likely save on maintenance costs.

PVC

PVC or polyvinyl chloride decking is 100% plastic, meaning it requires no staining or sealing and is highly moisture and UV-resistant. It is the most expensive option for decking but is nearly maintenance-free. Compared to wood or composite, it can get hot in direct sun and may not blend into natural landscapes as well. However, PVC is a great option for homeowners who want durability that they don’t have to worry about.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Deck Materials

With a variety of outdoor deck materials to choose from, making the right selection can be puzzling. Our expert designers in Portland are standing by, ready to help ensure you get the deck that best fits your needs and matches your tastes.

  • Maintenance: Decks require maintenance to keep them looking good, but you can choose how much time and money you want to spend on your perfect outdoor deck. Unlike composites or synthetics, woods need more TLC, including staining and sealing, to prevent fading and moisture damage.
  • Aesthetics: When choosing between natural and synthetic materials, decide whether you prefer the warm, nature-inspired look of wood or if you prefer to pick from a range of colors and finishes to best match your home’s style and your taste. Today’s composites can mimic a wood look, but sometimes, nothing beats the real thing.
  • Durability: The Oregon weather is finicky. Our abundant rainfall can cause moisture damage to backyard decks, but we also see our share of bright sun, which means UV exposure can also be a factor causing cracking and fading color. If your deck will not be covered, consider materials that are resistant to the weather.
  • Environmental Impact: At Landscape East & West, we’re all about using natural and organic products. Sustainably sourced woods and composites made from recycled materials are choices we offer to our customers to reduce our environmental footprint and ensure we’re not damaging ecosystems through forest degradation.
  • Safety: Looking at our mixture of damp and dry weather, it pays to factor safety into your deck material decision. Rain and pool or hot tub water can make deck surfaces slippery. Additionally, those bright sunny days can make some surfaces too hot to walk on. We’ll help you choose the right slip- and heat-resistant materials to match your needs.

Our Design Process

Our outdoor deck designs depend on your vision mixed with our tried and true design process. During an initial phone conversation, landscape design experts will discuss your project and budget so we can be prepared to visit your home for a consultation. When we arrive, we’ll listen to your ideas and questions and examine your space.

During a site evaluation, we’ll consider the sunlight and shade in your Oregon yard, as well as its size ensuring a new deck is proportionate to the space. We’ll explore your soil type and yard drainage for the best footings and foundation. Understanding how you plan to use your deck will help us see if additional structural support may be necessary to accommodate a hot tub, fire pit, furniture, plants, and people. Our experts will also be ready to address local building code requirements and permit needs to ensure whatever deck we install is safe and sound.

With an overall vision in place, we’ll create a concept design along with a budget estimate and timeline so you know well ahead of time precisely what the project entails. Of course, nothing is set in stone, and adjustments can be made along the way to ensure your vision comes to life.
